Don Freeman is the Managing Director of Freeman Capital Management LLC, a US-SEC Registered Investment Advisor specializing in portfolio management for expatriates, founded in 2002.
Don earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University and worked at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. As a mechanical engineer, Don has a thorough understanding of complex systems and mathematics, which serves him well as an investment analyst. An engineer is trained to view problems unemotionally, also vital for the successful investor.
He applied his engineering discipline to investments successfully and soon was asked to offer financial education classes at Portland Community College, where he continues to teach. In his classes, Don presents both fundamental and highly technical investment concepts. He gives detailed explanations of various asset allocation models, and stresses the need for a disciplined approach to investing. He helps students develop their own investment strategies, suited to their short-term and long-term goals. Don also offers investment seminarsthroughout Southeast Asia.
After explaining the impact of globalization, technology and emerging markets for eight years to his clients and students, Don moved to SE Asia in 2008 to study the emerging markets first hand. He was soon offered several positions selling investment “products,” which paid large upfront commissions. He declined, knowing such products would not serve his clients’ best interests. To meet the need among expatriates for professional financial advice without a sales agenda, he expanded Freeman Capital Management as the only US-registered investment advisor in Phuket and Chiang Mai. Don currently manages securities portfolios and retirement plans for individuals and small businesses.
